FSL CHROMATOGRAPHY FLOWERS STEM WORKSHOP WITH KINDERGARTENDERS

SEPTEMBER 2021

The workshop that we conducted with elementary school students at the Oxbridge School consisted of color chromatography. These bright scholars were able to create their very own paper flowers through a coffee filter, markers, water, scissors, and pile cleaners. This is such an interactive and simple little experiment that you can share with your friends or siblings. The kids are able to express their creativity through the designs they create on the coffee filter. Once you’ve filled up your coffee filter with various shapes and colorful patterns you have to fold it in half 8 times. You will then place the coffee filter in water. As the water is absorbed into the coffee filter the students will notice the mixtures separating due to the solubility in the solvent (water or oil). Through color chromatography the students were able to see the different pigments that create a certain color. Although the students were too young to understand color chromatography, through the experiment they were able to see what it was. When all the flowers are completely dry you will cut them into the flower shape you want. Finally, you will twist at the bottom and attach the chenille pipe to the coffee filter. Wonderful! You’ve now created your very own paper flowers with unique shades of color. Our students gave their flowers to their peers, classmates, and teachers as a gesture of kindness and friendship.
