FSL volunteers at The Garden of Resilience
APRIL 2021
In honor of Earth Day, the Future STEM Leaders team took a trip to the Garden of Resilience in Springfield, NY. We were able to weed plants and maintain the scenic garden in small acts of service. The garden has very similar missions as FSL, as we both want to benefit and uplift minority communities
In this community, there is a majority African American demographic. The Garden of Resilience combines social justice and environmental sustainability to support its powerful message. Paintings memorializing people of color including George Floyd, Brianna Taylor, and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, are plastered in the garden beside the vibrant colors of flowers and crops.
Unfortunately, food insecurity is quite common in Springfield, as it is difficult to find organic and sustainably-grown crops on an affordable budget. With the contribution of the entire community, the Garden of Resilience is able to grow ethnic Afro- Caribbean vegetables that are fresh and organic.
They have recently implemented the use of QR codes in the garden. Each laser-carved QR code informs the reader of the science behind the crops as well as information about their facility.
When the vegetables are ready to be eaten, the community can pick them and take it home for free! As a member of your community, begin to take initiative for minority groups and learn about bringing sustainability to your area!
